49ers Hot Read Blog on San Jose Mercury News &bull Dec 15, 2011

Pipe down, 49ers fans, at least when your team has the ball on offense. That is the closing message of a press release issued by the team this morning, and no doubt related to last game's lack of tact (see:… Full Story »

  2. Mike Holmgren: Press Conference Transcript on Concussion Situation and Keeping Shurmur Long-Term

    Dawgs by Nature &bull Dec 15, 2011

Cleveland Browns team president Mike Holmgren met with the press Wednesday afternoon for just the second time during the regular season (I believe), which I briefly reviewed yesterday . After the jump, you'll find the full press conference transcript, or if you'd like to sit through the entire thing, you can view the conference at the official team website. Usually I only select important quotes, but everything Holmgren says tends to be noteworthy. During the conference, Holmgren said, "you're either with us or you're not," in regards to the team changing its way from over a decade of a losing… Full Story »

Arizona Cardinals' Calais Campbell (93) sacks San Francisco 49ers' Alex Smith during the first quarter in an NFL football game, Sunday, Dec. Ron Jaworski, who once dedicated a lengthy "Monday Night Football" segment to dissecting flaws in Alex Smith's throwing motion, was back in his office Wednesday breaking down game film of the 49ers quarterback. He really hasn't made a whole… Full Story »

NFL News on Sporting News &bull Dec 15, 2011

  6. Mike Holmgren defends Cleveland Browns' on-field treatment of Colt McCoy, says criticism is 'unfair'

    Browns News on Cleveland.com &bull Dec 15, 2011

BEREA, Ohio -- The Browns did not give the standard concussion test to Colt McCoy before letting him back in the Pittsburgh game because he showed no symptoms of head injury after getting decked on a helmet-to-facemask hit from Steelers linebacker James Harrison. Further, team doctors and trainers were unaware of the severity of the blow that earned Harrison a one-game NFL suspension because they were tending to other injured players and did not see the hit. McCoy first showed concussion symptoms… Full Story »

  9. Niners won't see Harrison's 'brand' of play [SFI]

    49ers Paradise &bull Dec 14, 2011

Steelers linebacker James Harrison has delivered one too many questionable hits on opposing players, and now each hit he makes going forward will be scrutinized by officials during the game and by league officials afterward. Harrison is now branded forever as a dirty player, and the one-game suspension that will keep him out Monday against the 49ers could be just the start of future penalties. Chances are Harrison has never heard of Hester Prynne, the flawed but unflappable protagonist of the "The Scarlet Letter." No disrespect intended toward the Pittsburgh linebacker, banished for one game by the NFL concussion… Full Story »

  11. Week 15 Patriots vs Broncos: Comparing Quarterbacks

    Pats Pulpit &bull Dec 14, 2011

So I might be a little late to the game here, but I thought it would be nice to compare the two quarterbacks that will be taking the field on Sunday. I was actually a little surprised by the results. In order to compare the numbers, I only looked at statistics over the past eight games. Quarterbacks only qualified if they played in seven or eight games, which left 24 candidates . I compared passing statistics (attempts, completions, rates, yards, touchdowns, interceptions, rates) and rushing statistics (attempts, yards, touchdowns, rates) amongst quarterbacks and Tom Brady wasn't first in any categories.… Full Story »

Time for todays links, with a lot of them looking at the turnaround the team has made, chances at the playoffs, and Larry still finding ways to amaze us. Also, along with the PFF post, I was able to find a film review by Gref Cosell for NFL Films where he looked at how our defense matched up against the 49ers on Sunday. On Twitter, Merill Hodge also said the Cardinals have the most improved defense in the NFL, it looks like they are playing with 15 players, and they are outstanding at blitzing. Jim Trotter also posted something saying… Full Story »

  15. NFL Week 15 Preview (film study)

    NFL Touchdown &bull Dec 14, 2011

The Bears played three and a half courters of fast, patient, disciplined defense. For the most part, they did a great job distributing eight box defenders and diagnosing Denver's zone-run designs. In the late stretch, however, when the Broncos had to go aerial, the Bears softened their zones and went with vertically stretched Tampa 2 concepts. This opened the underneath dumpoff passes and allowed receivers to make plays on comeback routes (cornerbacks Charles Tillman and Tim Jennings were both uncharacteristically poor in terms of off-coverage and post-catch physicality). But keep in mind, dumpoffs and comebacks only work if the play… Full Story »
